Unusual "Piano-Forte For Sale
Richard Frederick, Piano Technician, 484-9360
A number of years ago, I modified a 64 note spinet to sound like a harpsichord or perhaps a piano-forte. (The piano-forte was the primitive piano with no metal frame and small diameter strings. Tuning stability was, like the harpsichord, quite unstable.) The redesign included a thinner, solid wood (vs. plywood) soundboard and much smaller diameter strings. New hammers were made to produce the desired tone
The result was an instrument with the piano-like feature of control of dynamics, stable tuning as a result of the metal frame, and light tone rather like a harpsichord.
I enjoyed this instrument for some time but put it aside for other interests. Now I need to reduce some of my un-needed "toys" so I am offering this instrument for sale. It is about 36" tall and two octaves shorter than the modern piano. It is finished in red enamel which, I believe, is appropriate to its tone. It includes a sturdy matching bench.
Of course, no established market exists for such an instrument so I have priced it at just $300. I hope someone will buy it and enjoy it as I have.
