March 2006
LAMTA Meeting March 8, 9:15 AM
Judy Johnson
Program: Dr. Alejandra Cremaschi
Location: Mountain View Presbyterian Church
Business Meeting begins at 9:15 a.m. Program begins at 10:00 a.m.
This is definitely a program you'll not want to miss.
Dr. Alejandro Cremaschi, from the University of Colorado will present a program on the Music of Latin America. It will feature a piano performance and a power point presentation. This is a joint meeting with the Fort Collins Music Teachers and will be followed by a pot-luck luncheon. Please bring your favorite dish. You may want to invite your students and their families to attend the program. There is plenty of room.
Dr. Cremaschi's hometown is Mendoza, Argentina. His education includes Licenciado en Piano from the National University of Cuyo. BA in piano performance from University of Maryland Baltimore County, MM and DMA in piano from the University of Minnesota.
He has a love for music performance and for teaching. "I've been always very interested in how people learn and figuring out better ways to teach. I am the oldest of 5 siblings, so I had a chance to "teach" all my siblings to do things even as a young child!"
When asked about his favorite composer/musician he said, "This is a hard question to answer. I admire many composers and musicians for different reasons... Mozart for his gracefulness and gorgeous melodies, Schumann for his spontaneity, Brahms for his depth, Ginastera for his energy, and of course because he uses motives from the folk music of my country! I could go on and on..."
His favorite vacation destination? "I have to say... Mexico. My wife is from there (Guadalajara), and we go there in December. We try to visit a new place every time. Fascinating country with a lot of history, traditions, beautiful beaches and gorgeous nature." His favorite color is green??
I asked him what he would like us to know before he comes. "The program is about music of Latin America at the intermediate level that teachers can get in the US. I tried to pick pieces that would be attractive to both teachers, students and parents, and that represent different countries and styles. Much of it is based on folk elements from Brazil, Mexico and Argentina. I play some of this repertoire regularly and have recorded some of the pieces."
April Meeting: There is still time to read "The Perfect Wrong Note" by William Westney which we will be discussing at the April Meeting. It is available at Music and Arts at a reduced price. Sandy and I had the opportunity to attend the Metro State Piano Celebration a few weeks ago and hear Dr. Westney speak. Even if you don't have time to read the whole book, buy a copy and skim through the chapter headings.
President's Message
Dr. William Popp
First of all, I want to extend a welcome to all our members to attend the next meeting. The program will be outstanding. Along with this, I have information on several summer programs and festivals that will be of interest to many. And, we may have two visiting teachers who are interested in joining us. They are: Ms. Jo Buckridge (piano) from Berthoud, and Mr. Adrian Yanez (guitar) from Campion. Also, Teacher of the Year nominations are being accepted. If you want to nominate someone, with my endorsement, please send the nomination to Nancy Kaesler no later than April 1.
As this season begins to draw to a close, I will be looking for two members to join me on the nomination committee to select officers for next year. Please take some time to think of possible candidates. It isn't too early.
Finally, congratulations on another successful Achievement Day. The students sounded great and the teachers were wonderful. I especially want to thank all who helped plan, set up, and run the event. Bravo.
2007 Piano Festival
Debi Strick
It is the unanimous consent of the Piano Festival committe that the subject for 2006 will be composers from the United States or Canada from any time period. The other required piece must be from a different time period, but can be any piano composer. This is a good thing to know now in case you would like any of your intermediate or advaned students to work on pieces starting now. It's never too early.
Teacher Day and Music & Arts
Sonia Haxton
The third Wednesday of each month is "teacher day" at Music & Arts. The Music and Arts teacher special for March 15 is 35% off ALL supplements. Also, I now have composer note cards in the store (in the bin with the camp books). They are copies of the color paintings by Dan Moncure that are in the camp books-Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, and a black and white pen drawing of Beethoven.
Let me know if you would prefer Teacher Appreciation Day to be the same day as the meeting? A lot of teachers stop by the store after the meeting.
Music Camps
Sonia Haxton
It's time to plan your music camps for this summer!! To help you promote your camp, I have a camp summary letter that you can send home at this time. The letter describes each camp so you can see which camps they would be most interested in. I can send you a copy by email. You also have registration forms for each individual camp in the back of your teacher's editions that you can use. You can just fill in your information.
It is very important to get this information out as soon as possible. As we said at the meeting, people start planning their children's activities this time of year for the summer. People WILL sign up their children for camps this summer, and it is up to you to sell them on the idea that MUSIC CAMP is the one that they should choose!! Any chance you get to talk to parents at lessons, on the phone, or at recitals you can promote this with enthusiasm and tell them what a great learning experience it would be for their child.
If you have any questions just let me know!! My phone number is 377-2283.
Happy Camping!!
