LAMTA Meeting February 8, 9:03 AM
Judy Johnson
Program: Achievement Day Planning Session
Location: First Christian Church, 2000 N. Lincoln Ave., in the lunch room
At this meeting, the scheduling for Achievement Day will be completed and final plans will be made. This is a must attend for anyone who has students in Achievement Day.
If you haven't yet started to read "The Perfect Wrong Note" by William Westney, now is the time. It is a great book and copies are available at Music & Arts at a reduced price. We will discuss this book at our April meeting.
Thank you to everyone who attended our Mozart Celebration in January. I was delighted with the variety and with the number in attendance. Your contributions were very much enjoyed and appreciated.
President's Message
Dr. William Popp
As always, February will be a busy month for LAMTA. If you have students participating in Achievement Day (and even if you don't) please attend our planning meeting at First Christian Church on February 8. The generous support of our teachers is what always makes Achievement Day successful. It is a wonderful experience for our students. I am looking forward to the event on February 25.
For those attending the national conference in Austin here are a couple of announcements. The West Central Dinner will be Sunday, March 26 at Dan McKlusky's; located at 301 East 6th Street. Entree choices are: Filet Mignon, Charbroiled Gulf Shrimp, Grilled King Salmon, Teriyaki Chicken Breast, New York Strip, Vegetarian Dish. The cost is $38.00 (includes tax and gratuity). If you wish to attend please mail a check payable to Thomas Ediger, 1324 2nd Ave., Nebraska City, NE 68410. Include your name, address, entree choice, phone, and e-mail. Also, Sally Laird, MTNA Junior Competitions Coordinator, is looking for volunteers for Saturday morning, March 25. She needs time keepers, judges, and monitors. Contact her at laird@ak.net if you can assist.
The "big" news right here at LAMTA is that both Vice Presidents and I have announced our departures from office at the close of this season. I also received official word from Tanya that she will be stepping down as Treasurer. My plan is to have a nomination committee up and running by early March to address this daunting task. We have many qualified people who can fill these positions. Feel free to give me your thoughts on this issue (the sooner, the better).
In closing, I would like to thank all who attended the January meeting and participated in the program. It was gratifying to see such a large, enthusiastic showing (in fact, you might say it bordered on standing room only). I am looking forward to the next few months. Let's keep it up.
Best wishes to all,
Bill Popp

Sonatina Festival
Caroline Orman
I wish to encourage all teachers to find a student to participate in next year's festival (sponsored by the Loveand Friends of Chamber Music and its director, Ruth Hale.
My student felt that she was well prepared. However, at the December rehearsal, she found out that her temp fluctuated. I asked her what she could do to improve in this area. She said to me, "Use the metronome?" I answered, "What a good idea!" So, she practiced 5 times with the metronome to once without and her tempo was steady for the final performance Jan. 7. (The habit of the metronome has remained.)
This is an example of the good that can come from stretching oneself. This girl was all smiles because of her real improvement, the result of hard work and maturity in practicing. The kind words from the quartet members and others were well deserved and the "icing on the cake."
on the cake."
Thank you, Ruth, for providing this enriching experience for our students.
2007 Piano Festival
Debi Strick
It is the unanimous consent of the Piano Festival committe that the subject for 2006 will be composers from the United States or Canada from any time period. The other required piece must be from a different time period, but can be any piano composer. This is a good thing to know now in case you would like any of your intermediate or advaned students to work on pieces starting now. It's never too early.
Achievement Day
Achievement Day will be held at First Christian Church and Mountain View Presbyterian Church on February 25. Art projects are due by Friday morning at First Christian Church, February 24.
Teacher Day and Music & Arts
Sonia Haxton
The third Wednesday of each month is "teacher day" at Music & Arts. All Alfred method books and supplements will be 35% off on February 15. Also, I now have composer note cards in the store (in the bin with the camp books). They are copies of the color paintings by Dan Moncure that are in the camp books-Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, and a black and white pen drawing of Beethoven.
Music Camps
Sonia Haxton
It's time to plan your music camps for this summer!! To help you promote your camp, I have a camp summary letter that you can send home at this time. The letter describes each camp so you can see which camps they would be most interested in. I can send you a copy by email. You also have registration forms for each individual camp in the back of your teacher's editions that you can use. You can just fill in your information.
It is very important to get this information out as soon as possible. As we said at the meeting, people start planning their children's activities this time of year for the summer. People WILL sign up their children for camps this summer, and it is up to you to sell them on the idea that MUSIC CAMP is the one that they should choose!! Any chance you get to talk to parents at lessons, on the phone, or at recitals you can promote this with enthusiasm and tell them what a great learning experience it would be for their child.
If you have any questions just let me know!! My phone number is 377-2283.
Happy Camping!!

Sandy Lundberg
I plan to have a table at Achievement Day to sell Piano Booster Cushions. There has been no firm policy on how this works, so Bill would like to briefly discuss it at the meeting on February 8. If you need more information on this product, visit my WEBSITE.
