Baroque Dance and Musical Interpretation
Susan Burton/Caroline Orman
Since the required piece for the PianoFestival this year is Baroque, we thought it would be fun to delve into the dance styles of that period and perhaps get some ideas about interpretation.
You willlearn a few simple dance patterns and take home easy-to-follow directions to refresh your memory afterwards so you can show them to your students. (Aftersimilar sessions, haveyou everbeen frustrated to discover that you did not really learn the patterns well enough todemonstrate them convincingly?) You will be amazed at how the dance steps clue you into the musical interpretation. The Minuet and Gavotte will be emphasized, followed by thePolonaise and Sarabande, if time allows. Judy Johnson and Caroline Orman will share accompanying dutieswhile our guest,Susan Burton, teaches.
The pieces used for demonstration will be:
from the Anna Magdalena Bach Notebook Urtext Edicion Iberica:
No.3-- Minuetby Petzoldand and No. 14--Polonaiseby CPE Bach;
from the Palmer Ed., Alfred Publ."The Baroque Era", Gavotte by Handel;
and from J.S.Bach's French Suite No.1--Sarabande.
Susan Burton is an experienced dance instructor and choreographer with an M.A. in dance and related arts from Texas Women's University.She has taught in studios in Phoenix, AZ and Fort Worth, TX and in junior colleges in Texas and New Mexico.From 1987 to 2001, she was the owner and artistic director of The Academy of Ballet in Alamogordo, NM.
