December 2003

From the President's Desk
Judy Johnson
The Holiday Season is upon us and there is always so much to do, places to go, and things to see. I hope you can all have a peaceful and joyous season.

Thank you so much for your input and your suggestions at the last meeting. We really are a very diverse group and my plan is to have our executive committee draft a plan that will be acceptable to everyoneor at least most of us.

I was very pleased with the Piano Festival and with our Winners Recital on Sunday. It is definitely something that we need to plan on again.

I look forward to seeing you at our December Meeting. You are really going to enjoy itI know because I have heard it already.
Happy Holidays!!I love you all.

French Vocal Music & Brunch
December 10th
December's program will be led by LAMTA member Julianna Bishop Hoch who hails from Denver. Julianna holds a D.A. in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from UNC. She also has a Master of Music in Voice Performance from the Manhattan School of Music and a Bachelor of Music in the same field from Eastman School of Music. She was drawn into her current field because she loves to sing. Julianna says that she enjoys teaching singing even more than singing itself. Her favorite composers are Handel and Donizetti because their pieces are "so much fun to sing." She loves to vacation in the Austrian Alps, and her favorite colors are purple and teal blue. Please join us in welcoming Julianna to our December program.

We are going to haveour usual ChristmasBrunch, but it will be after the program this year because singers do not like to eat before they sing.So plan on a short business meeting beginning at 9:03,program beginning at 9:30,and brunch at 10:30.Please bring your favorite dish, and be generous because we will have about five guests. The brunch and program will be held at the home of Ruth Hale.

Keep Practicingfor January!
Don't forget that we are looking forward to our "Sharing French Music Program" on January 14. It still isn't too late to find a piece. It needn't be difficult and certainly doesn't have to be memorized.

Scheduling Suggestion
Beverly Haag would like to share her method for scheduling students. Each student has three, 45-minute lessons per month, instead of four, 30-minute lessons. The student choose's which week he or she has off. Beverly doesn't do any make up lessons. She says she makes more money because students don't skip lessons. For more information, contact Beverly at 622-9802.

Piano Festival Benefit Recital
Caroline Orman
The post-Piano Festival Recitalheld on November 16, was a modest success, with about 13 participants and their families attending, plus a few from the community. The students played very well and many of the parents expressed appreciation to LAMTA for hosting the recital. The donations received for the Cheri Richards Memorial Scholarship Fund were the exact equivalent of one scholarship, $125! We need to think about doing this again next year.

Manythanks to all who helped and/or brought treats for the reception.Mountain View Church did not charge us anything since the recitaldonations were for scholarships.

Harp Recital Was Wonderful!
Carol Condit, Judy Johnson and Debbie Richard enjoyed a wonderful evening when we attended Rachel Ellin's Faculty Harp Recital at CSU on November 17.Much of her music was by contemporaryFrench Composers. In addition to solos, the recital included a duet with two harps and Rachel playing harp with the CSU Faculty String Quartet. We were so glad that we went!
