November 2003
From the President's Desk
Judy Johnson
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed our 35th year Celebration. I hope all of you did too.
We are printing the history portion. Put it in your membership handbook. Thanks to all who came and to all who helped. For those who couldn't be there, in addition to reading the history, I introduced all of our past presidents. Some were unable to attend but we honored them anyway. Judy Bonnell, CSMTA President was there and spoke. Musical presentations were by Evan Orman, cello, son of Caroline Orman. He was accompanied by Barbara Engelhardt, a past president, who had been his teacher. Also, Amanda Farnsworth, vocal, accompanied by Promise Farnsworth, who had both been students of past president, Carol Patterson. The highlight of the morning were remarks by Margaret Miller, who had been the first president of LAMTA. She spends the winter in Yuma, Arizona and postponed her departure for two days so that she could come. She is a delightful lady. I have also included the poem she wrote and read to us. She also gave us a handout about scales that was presented at one of the first meetings. If any of you who weren't there would like a copy, please call me. Carol Condit prepared a wonderful refreshment table. Sandy Lundberg prepared name tags and programs. Thanks to Renee Clay and Tania Newgord for help with the history and for taking pictures. And thanks to all of you for being a part of this great organization. Let's keep working to keep it great and to make it even better.
January Program
Just a reminder that our January program will be performances by all of us--a selection by a French composer. Please plan to participate. We'd like to have you introduce your piece and tell us something about the composer. Now is the time to pick you piece and begin to practice.
Program Presenters
Our program presenters for November are Karen Ziegler and Christine Schumann.
Karen's hometown is Boulder and she graduated from CU with a degree in Music Education. She was drawn into music as a profession because she has always had a love of sharing knowledge and teaching others. She says that it is a thrill when a student all-of-a-sudden understands! She thoroughly enjoys working with children and is impressed with how genuine and how enthusiastic they are. Karen's favorite composer is Chopin. She feels that his music is so personal, expressive, and introspective. It speaks to her, especially when she is playing his piano works. Her favorite vacation destination is Europe and blue counts as her favorite color.
Christine Schumann is a native of Loveland. She is also a graduate of CU with a Bachelor of Music degree is Bassoon and Piano Performance. She has done postgraduate work at CSU as well. She was drawn into her current field because of her love of music. Christine began piano lessons when she was four years old. Her favorite composer is Chopin. She loves his use of rich color and the improvisatory characteristic of his writing. Her favorite spot for vacationing is Hawaii and purple is her favorite color.
