Biography for Carolyn Shaak
Carolyn Shaak is a native of Florida, but grew up in Charleston, South Carolina. She has earned degrees in music from the University of South Carolina and Columbia University's Teachers College. She has also traveled to Italy on a Fulbright Scholarship and has served as an assistant professor at the University of Illinois. Carolyn says that she has always loved to make music and to listen to music. "Teaching came very naturally to me since my mother and sister were both teachers." She is a resident of Denver and is a member of DAMTA.

When asked to name her favorite composer, she said that it would be impossible to do so because, "I am enchanted by music from any period if it is written well and has an emotional message for me." Her favorite vacation destinations are New York City and London. Her favorite color is blue. Carolyn and her students presented a marvelous program for LAMTA in May, 2003. We welcome her back and look forward to another informative presentation.

Congratulations to Juliana Bishop Hoch!!
Juliana turned in her Doctoral Dissertation to her Research Advisor at UNC on Sunday, February 15, 2004. She is so relieved that it is finished and we are so excited for her. That was one of the final steps and she will soon be awarded her degree. She will defend her dissertation on April 8, from 12:00 -2:00 p.m.Her dissertation is a stylistic analysis of the music of RobertE. Kreutz, who was a Colorado composer, and father of Mr. BobKreutz who teaches orchestra at Thompson Valley High School.

Her March 9, recital at CSU has been postponed until October. It was not connected to her degree and she found it necessary to focus on her dissertation completion instead of her recital, since her completion date was moved up by three months, due to three members of her committee retiring in May.She just couldn'tget her dissertation in and do the recital as well.Again, congratulations Juliana! We are proud of you.

Website Impact Continues
We continue to receive good feedback about our website. Here are a couple of comments:
"What a wonderful website, and an enormous step forward for Lamta. It's absolutely great. I do congratulate you for putting this all together...."
Paula O'Neil -- LAMTA member

"I got on your website and found it easy to get to and a nice layout. Way to go! Just thought I'd let you know I was very impressed! Hope all is well!"
Judy Bonnell -- CSMTA President

Sandy was inspired by the LAMTA website to use the same system (iWeb Composer) to create a website for her own studio. You may see what she has done at www.berthoudmusic.com. Sandy is willing to walk anyone else in LAMTA through the process of creating their own website. She says if she can do it anyone can!

Don't forget that we can add community event updates at any time during the month, so if you have an event to add, please email webmaster@lamta.org. The deadline for regular April newsletter submissions is March 30.
