Richards & Destigter Memorial Scholarship

Cheri Richards was a member of LAMTA in April, 2000, when she died suddenly at the age of 44. Her family requested that monetary gifts be given to LAMTA for the benefit of piano students. At that time a committee was formed to set up a Memorial Scholarship Fund.
In 2008, JoAnn Destigter, also a member of LAMTA, died after valiantly fighting a blood disease. Her family has also requested that her name be added to this fund to help students fulfill JoAnn's dream of "Making a Joyful Noise" through music. Each year the interest earned is awarded through a scholarship competition to students of LAMTA teachers for partial payment of their tuition. The amount and number of the scholarships will be determined on a year to year basis, depending upon the amount of interest that has accrued. When determining recipients, consideration is given to talent, family size and financial need.LAMTA, as an affiliate of MTNA, has 501-c3 status, (non-profit & tax-exempt) allowing all donations to the Memorial Fund to be tax deductible.

To Participate:
1. Consider the qualifications and needs of your students.
2. Complete the applications provided by the specified date.
3. Funds will be paid directly to the teachers of the students who are awarded the scholarships.

Chopin Award

The Frederic Chopin Award is given annually to a High School Senior who is not only a fine pianist, but has used his or her skill & talent on the piano to benefit the school.

The student must be an accompanist for the choir or soloists, or play the piano or keyboard in a jazz band.

Each local high school (Loveland, Thompson Valley, Mountain View and Berthoud) has a plaque that hangs in its band or choir room on which the name of the recipient is engraved. Awards may also be given to students who are home schooled or attend other high schools and contribute their piano skills in the community. They require the recommendation of their LAMTA teacher and someone involved in their work.

A pin and a check for $50.00 is awarded to the recipient.

Our purpose is to honor young pianists and encourage them to continue to learn and to share their musical talents with others.

A representative of LAMTA contacts the music teachers at each high school in the spring to determine if there is a candidate. In some years there may be no candidate at one or more schools. Arrangements are then made to present the award.
